And it’s about having the people in the lab (or radiology department) to do the testing. Support services are struggling too,

Agreed. As as “card carrying” Bowel Screener, I’m not entirely convinced methodology is correct. A relatively insensitive FIT screen followed by a frenzy of diminutive polypectomy misses the point (& 1000s of cancers) IMO. Many better options. DM me if interested in my thoughts?

Huge respect to all of you for bringing this sort of horrifying and completely unacceptable/criminal behaviour into the spotlight. Calling it out has to be the first step. Support and protection for those who do the next. We CANNOT allow this to happen in our profession.

I used to when in practice, as taught by RJ Nichols. To prevent opening of microperforations in the transverse colon when peeling it off, and to make later re-operation (for reconstruction) easier. Also, probably makes the surgery faster. This was in “open” surgery.

Many good reasons ..not least because surgeons constitute nearly 30% of the national endoscopy workforce! Don’t want to steal James’s thunder on the rest. 😉 Maybe the better question is why we are still trying to justify this!!

Which is why these people need a DRE in primary care along with their FIT so they won’t need to be referred urgently, or at all.

That was incidental Dave! Even I might have seen most of these without help - and I don’t know if the patient was a trial candidate Important point you make though - several points. Funding of colonoscopy screening and resect and discard policies are being “investigated.”
