We begin the final morning of our conference with a bevy of student papers, starting with our student rep on the exec Austin McCredie & a clear-eyed analysis of death in the poetic works of Ephrem the Syrian.

Having just learned about the puzzles of time's relationship to motion in Augustine's corpus from Joachim Haddad, we're now digging deeper into Maximus the Confessor's exegesis of the Gospel of Matthew with Brooke Olmstead.

Lots of references to the work of @JordanW41069857 in Olmstead's Maximian interpretation of the Christological depths of imitation & perfection in Matthew. The Neo-Chalcedonian vibes are getting more palpable up here in Toronto...

Lest anyone presume we're done with student papers -- we're not! Next up is Karim Guirguis on embodied purity in Moses of Abydos, followed by Arjun Aralampalam on Clement of Alexandria & the formation of the gods.

Having learned from 5 stellar student presentations in a row, we're now pivoting to Mona Tokarek LaFosse's review of _Medicine, Health, & Healing in the Ancient Mediterranean (500 BCE – 600 CE): A Sourcebook_ (University of California Press (is on Bluesky)) by Dr. Kristi Upson-Saia, Heidi Marx-Wolf, & @JaredSecord.

Lots of shout-outs in this book review session to the fine work being done by folks linked to the ReMeDHe News & Resources @remedhe.bsky.social project. It's also amazing to hear that the editors were able to make sure all translators & research assistants got paid for their work on this sourcebook.

Sounds like an amazingly comprehensive & expertise-laden sourcebook with which any instructor would be lucky to teach! Snag your copy here: ucpress.edu/book/978052029…

Hard to believe that we've already arrived at the final session of the 2024 CSPS Conference! John Solheid got us started with a grounded exploration of Didymus the Blind. Now Nathan Scott is subtly working to harmonize Origen's varying positions on astrology.

Another Nathan -- Nathan Porter of Duke fame -- is now inviting us to take a fresh look at key terms like ousia, hypostasis, & miahypostatic by way of the writings of Cyril of Alexandria & Theodoret of Cyrrhus.

We end the conference on a somber but poignant note, sharing remembrances of the recently & dearly departed Paul-Hubert Poirier, a founding member of the CSPS & a titan in the field. hthibodeau.com/fr/Necrologies…

Not everyone knew that Paul-Hubert Poirier was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. But he was! He was just too humble to bring it up... aibl.fr/membres-associ…

It was a great conference, in my humble estimation! Lots of work went into it, but in the end I think we pulled it off, in large part thanks to the staff at St. Augustine's Seminary of Toronto.
