Rob Randel knows his stuff and is a thoughtful advocate for evidence-informed reading instruction. This article is well worth your time. ⬇️ bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

"If Wales, Scotland and New Zealand want more equitable education systems where important learning is not left up to chance, they should decide on: core conceptual knowledge and related skills and how they can be built over time" says Lucy Crehan tes.com/magazine/analy…

My new article for the TES is out. It’s a suggestion of how to support coherence over time in a national curriculum framework, while leaving space for school and teacher autonomy.

'This is the true story of how thousands of children in Wales are being left behind by teaching methods that have been proven not to work.' Wales Reporter Rhys Williams﮷ goes inside the reading crisis that has left thousands of children unable to read itv.com/news/2024-09-2…

Excellent 🧵 A very clear summary of the issues in the teaching of reading in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I’ve been training secondary school children out of guessing for decades. It’s so much better to teach them correctly from the start.

“Whatever their aspirations in life, reading won’t be the thing that holds them back” - Alec Mills, Headteacher, Twynyrodyn Primary School. Watch and read this excellent ITV report on how Alec’s school is one of few exceptions to the rule in Wales. Also featuring Gareth Rein and

A brilliant report & thread by Rhys Williams﮷. My only disagreement is around fault. A systemic issue means we’re all at fault. Until we realise that we will not change anything (like anti-racism for example). But perhaps the point is not to point fingers but to enact change

Well, that ITV Wales News report about reading standards in Wales was a marmalade-dropper... We've turned around a reaction episode today which aims to unpack things a bit, and ask what it might mean for Curriculum for Wales more widely. Stand by to receive it in your feeds!

Chris Taylor Rhys Williams﮷ This could be a helpful move, but I would prefer for the first step to be the appointment of someone to lead a review. This would include gathering data of how we currently teach reading and writing in Wales, especially focussing on outcomes, which is difficult in the primary...

Chris Taylor Rhys Williams﮷ Thanks Chris. Early years practice, based on child development, is a critical factor. Due to the deep orthography of English, the direct teaching of reading and writing should begin in the early years. This can be achieved alongside evidence informed early years practice.

Gareth Rein (@garein) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Chris Taylor Rhys Williams﮷ It's interesting that Sweden (Swedish also has a deep orthography) is making these changes at the moment. What's fascinating for Wales, is that Welsh has a shallow orthography. These factors would be considered in the training provided by a Wales-wide Centre for Literacy.

Chris Taylor Rhys Williams﮷ The Centre for Literacy could be based at one of our universities, but would act at arms length from the education school and feed into practice across the system. It would have the power to direct ITE across the country in training for the teaching of reading and writing.

Following the excellent report on reading from Rhys Williams﮷ last week, Thomas Breeze has put together a very informative and reflective podcast featuring Gareth Rein and Gareth Evans. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/emm…

Terry Mackie Would have been good to have included at least one teacher, wouldn’t it! Rob Randel would have been a good one. This panel does not make me feel optimistic that anything positive will come of this.

To what extent is creativity an application of knowledge? How important is the knowledge? How important is the application?
