Our family gingerbread house is officially complete! Structural integrity is … questionable. Hoping it holds until Christmas🎄

I'm excited to welcome 12 new PhD students to our Center for Sustainable Development at Addis Ababa University. Engaging with them over the past two weeks has been energizing -- not just a process of teaching, but one of learning as well. #AfricaEuropeCoRE

An article that I co-authored with Gerhard Anders entitled “The State in Malawi as Idea and Practice” in the 'Journal of Southern African Studies' is now out. It is an afterword to a special Malawi issue. It can be access through this link: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

The recipient of an honorary doctorate degree should not address himself/herself as 'Doctor'. This "devalues the hard work of genuine scholars [and] erodes public trust in both academia and political leadership", per Prof Dan Banik. I couldn't agree more.

I was interviewed in NationOnline on the aid cuts and #Malawi’s next chapter: less donor cash means doubling down on domestic revenue, climate-proof farming, clean public spending, and fresh partnerships across the Global South. Tough road, but the future is Malawi's to shape.

Six months after my heart attack, I’m finding joy in small things — like mowing the lawn. It’s not about doing more, but seeing differently. Forward, not backward. That’s the real work.

Alcohol death rates in Europe. Apparently very low in cultures where drunkenness is frowned upon and where alcohol is only consumed in company of others and served alongside meals. Spain and Italy for example. Source: buff.ly/3wDQcRz

New book: Fragile Aid Why does aid fail in fragile states? Our book dives into this—it's not just about how much we give, but how. • Delivery methods matter • Top-down aid often fails without local understanding • We need adaptable approaches 👉 go.unu.edu/vnGwD

🕊️ Joseph S. Nye has passed — a giant in international relations and a generous thinker. I was honored to speak with him on In Pursuit of Development 🎙️🌍 about soft power and ethics in foreign policy. A conversation I’ll always value. 🎧 podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/do-…

🌍 Africa is not waiting to be spoken for. It is speaking, leading, and transforming from within. Let us listen, amplify, and support African-led pathways to justice, sustainability, and shared prosperity. Happy #AfricaDay2025! #AfricaEuropeCoRE The Guild ARUA

I'm happy to share a new publication on women's representation in deliberative fora w/ Amanda Clayton, Boniface Dulani, and Katrina Kosec. We randomize the gender composition of groups tasked with discussing deforestation in Malawi. Published open access: doi.org/10.1111/ajps.1…
