I have no words to express my deep sadness for the loss of Will Steffen who passed away last night. He had been one of the most influential individuals in global change science programs, director of GCTE, IGBP, and driver of ESSP that led to the creation of the GlobalCarbonProject

This is terribly sad news. A leading figure in Earth system science. Much of my life has been in Will's footsteps, from the ANU Mountaineering Club (I will forever associate Mt Tennent with Will!) to working on the Planetary Boundaries in Stockholm.

Oh, no! What chocking news! Will Steffen was one of my scientific heroes. His work on Earth System change and Biosphere resilience inspired me to work on these issues. He has inspired many of my colleagues. Let’s honor him by continuing to move this important field forward ❤️
