📜 Context Predicting source code #vulnerability helps to focus attention on areas that need to be examined with more scrutiny. Assuming that function names reflect purpose and thus vulnerability risk, earlier work trained a #DNN to highlight possible vulnerabilities.

🤔 Motivation However, DNNs are difficult to interpret and expensive & data hungry to train. We address this in a featherweight approach that uses identifier splitting to examine if the names of vulnerable functions are more likely to contain certain “dangerous words”.

💡 Findings We #empirically evaluate our approach and find that “dangerous words” make up a significant part of what the DNN learns to find. Moreover, our featherweight predictor requires orders of magnitude less training data and can learn from a single project.

If you are wondering what these dangerous words look like, the following is an overview of the most and least dangerous words for some of the systems analyzed:

An email exchange with the nice IEEE ICSME 2025 crowd led to the following blurb. May be useful to some. I tried to keep it short and to the point. Could be/should be extended, but then it's not short anymore :-)
