Electoral reform still needs to be the biggest issue for a long-term strategy for the progressive left: What if? Post-war elections under the Single Transferable Vote electoral-reform.org.uk/what-if-post-w…

Even more reasons not to start opening new coal mines. In the UK, conservative estimate of 128,000 manufacturing jobs at risk from not investing in green technologies, because of ‘offshoring’ of green industrial development to countries outside the UK. tuc.org.uk/research-analy…

Fertility rates in Europe have been below sustainable levels for years, while sub-Saharan population explosion is driving the planet’s equally unsustainable over-population. Surely the more sustainable solution is to facilitate the movement of people? theguardian.com/money/2021/sep…

Students are now ‘consumers’ apparently. Higher education as a commodity to be bought and sold, rather than a democratic institution providing the means of developing citizen autonomy and critical thinking? Education is not training. theguardian.com/education/2022…

So Mike Starkie and Trudy Harrison are being… ahem… “economical with the truth” when they claim that the proposed Woodhouse mine will a) replace Russian imports of coking coal and b) supply British steel making significantly. Neither claim is true. theguardian.com/business/2022/…

1/3 As a decision on granting permission for a new coal mine in Cumbria looms, some facts: - 85% of coal produced would be for export, not domestic use - two major UK steel producers won’t necessarily use much of the coal, not least due to its composition and sulphur content

A bit taken aback by a Tory talking honestly about the environmental and reputational damage of opening a new coal mine in Cumbria, but it’s an encouraging development. #leaveitintheground #greenjobs

In approving the Cumbria coal mine, Michael Gove says it’s green because of use of carbon capture in UK. But there is no carbon capture technology in commercial use in UK. Pretty extraordinary decision for a government that says it is committed to net zero assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…

FGS, so many good ppl working so hard to decarbonise 'everything' & Michael Gove Conservatives approve a #COALMINE 🤯 🔹85% coal will be exported - no benefit to UK energy 🔹Offers just 1/12 jobs of green alternatives 🔹 Will hammer climate goals bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…

It is not possible to look carefully at the evidence and decide that this mine is compatible with climate goals. Anyone who makes that claim after taking a close look is either very incompetent or is lying. They should not be in politics. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…

So disappointed by the #cumbria #coalmine decision. Whatever train of thought led from 'how to bring more jobs to west Cumbria' and ended in 'open a coalmine' is deeply flawed. Primary school children could be trusted to reach a better conclusion.
