After nine years working at PBI Cobbitty, Dr Peter Dracatos will be leaving us to return to Melbourne. During his tenure at the PBI, Peter significantly contributed to barley leaf rust mapping and cloning research. We wish Peter all the best for his future endeavours!!

It's that time of the year again PBI Cobbitty, University of Sydney when the #wheat, #barley and #oats crop is advancing fast and our #ACRCP team is on top of it monitoring #rust #disease progress in well-established screening nurseries.

Humble #Barley a founder #crop of the Old World Neolithic #food production - first domesticated in the #FertileCrescent ~8000 years ago. The genus #Hordeum is extremely diverse, comprising ca. 32 #species (diploid and polyploid), #diversity

Recent reports of stripe rust infection in central/northern NSW, and ACRCP team is out for surveillance. Monitoring pathogen variability & use of resistant varieties is key for a coordinated rust control strategy. Monitor crops and if you spot rust, send samples to PBI Cobbitty.

2022 is going to be another big year in field. Our hard working team has sown over 80K #wheat and #barley entries in field for #rust testing and to generate resistance information for breeders. This work has been made possible by long term commitment of GRDC

#Striperust thrives in cool, moist conditions with temperatures between 10°C and 15°C and prolonged leaf wetness from dew or rain. These disease favoring conditions have been ideal at #Cobbitty this year and our #disease screening nurseries PBI Cobbitty, University of Sydney are thriving.
