An Augustus De Morgan "comic vignette" found in the wilderness of Cambridge University Library, "hinting at the ultimate object of all metrological science". Bonus points for the Frankenstein reference.

The exploration of the 1860 Solar Eclipse Expedition archival materials is back, and this time with some added fire. You can now read a fantastic guest post by Meg exploring the Airy - De Le Rue correspondence via this link: eclipse1860.substack.com/p/departure-di…

Were solar eclipse expeditions seen as labourious projects or as scenic trips? Augustus De Morgan's cartoon provide some 'esoteric' insights. You can read my latest post about the Solar Eclipse of 1860 here: eclipse1860.substack.com/p/the-whip-of-…

An amusing entry from Airy's journal to end a long day of research. The first time he tried the telephone: 1877 November 23.

How do you tackle language barriers within astronomy? If you were the director of Royal Observatory Greenwich in 1861, then you took Spanish lessons from locals in Greenwich. You can read my new little post exploring the 1860 Solar Eclipse via this link: eclipse1860.substack.com/p/spanish-less…

What would you choose: observing with your new telescope or a trip to Spain to observe an eclipse? Politician/Astronomer Isaac Fletcher faced this dilemma in 1860. Read what he and the Frodsham family chose in my latest post about the Eclipse of 1860: eclipse1860.substack.com/p/an-eclipse-o…

Can this be a reference to Alexander Graham Bell visiting the Royal Observatory at Greenwich Royal Observatory Greenwich in person in 1878? Perhaps this is a call to find out when the first telephone was installed at the Observatory.

Earlier this year, I put together a guide for researching the history of the Royal Observatory and the Astronomers Royal - and it's now live! A (hopefully) useful summary of relevant collections, digitised content, and official publications. Enjoy! 💫 rmg.co.uk/collections/re…

Bit late to #AdaLovelaceDay, but Cambridge UL Special Collections Cambridge University Library holds what I think is Ada's letter of request to George Airy to visit to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich Royal Observatory Greenwich in 1846. Note how it was "Mrs. Airy" (Richarda Airy) who was planned to show Ada around.

How do you like historical detective work North East Heritage Library? I have this photo of two street lamps and a house taken somewhere in Walker around 1902. Can you identify where it was taken? (And whether the lamp might still be there?) Image source: archive.org/details/the-el…

This includes a large selection of the Referee Reports too! Can't wait to delve into them more and to see what other comments can top this review of a paper: "rubbish of so rank a character that no competent person could possibly take any other view of it". (RR/15/38)
