John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, along with collaborators, have created a beautiful and insightful bridge between physics and AI. They invented neural networks that were not only inspired by the brain, but also by central notions in physics such as energy, temperature, system

John Hopfield has a nice article in the annual reviews of condensed matter physics. It starts off with a discussion of what physics is, which I think is totally on point.

This cathegory was there since the 90s. During times CS regarded neural nets as computationally infeasible, hundreds of physicist worked on them. When large datasets and GPUs came, it started working. Boundaries of fields are ill-defined and embracing this leads to progress!!

Proud moment for our research group! Both David G. Calatayud and Paula Magrinya shared their work through individual talks at the 2nd Soft Matter Day conference. Thrilled to see our team's work contributing to the field of soft matter science!

Now looking on the bright side. For example, maybe Elon Musk and co. can replace heads of US science agencies, who have wasted enormous sums and manpower on divisive, dysfunctional & misplaced diversity initiatives, to return nation’s focus to supporting science and innovation

Agency > Intelligence I had this intuitively wrong for decades, I think due to a pervasive cultural veneration of intelligence, various entertainment/media, obsession with IQ etc. Agency is significantly more powerful and significantly more scarce. Are you hiring for agency? Are

The Atlantic (The Atlantic) has a piece this week by Marc Novicoff (Marc Novicoff) that very kindly discusses my work on fertility: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… I’ve shared many related ideas here on X (please do check past posts), but the best summary is probably my EBRD

NEW: Is the internet changing our personalities for the worse? Conscientiousness and extroversion are down, neuroticism up, with young adults leading the charge. This is a really consequential shift, and there’s a lot going on here, so let’s get into the weeds 🧵
