The Cottingley Fairies appear in five photos taken by cousins Elsie Wright (age 16) & Frances Griffiths (9), from Bradford, UK. Their 1917 images caused many to believe the magical creatures were real....even fooling Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle #WomensArt

Next book to be reprinted is I Malavoglia (The House by the Medlar Tree) by Giovanni Verga , tr Judith Landry. It is the first translation Dedalus commissioned way back in 1984 and was published in 1985.

I remember looking at the previous translations of I Malavoglia at the Reading Room at the British Museum. They weren't very good & I even thought of translating it myself & did the first few pages before giving up as I wasn't very good. Happily we found Judith Landry to do it.

As a student I rang up the editor at Penguin and asked why they didn't do I Malavoglia as they did the lesser work of Verga. The answer was the lesser works were translated by D.H.Lawrence who didn't do I Malavoglia. An early publishing lesson I still remember.
