Trimming reeds at this time of year can be fatal. This reed warbler nest was mid-reedbed last week, now abandoned & the chicks died (tiny corpses removed for pic). Amazing how they attach nests to reeds with spider silk. Found by Jack Shutt Centre for Landscape Regeneration Dept of Zoology

My first experience of a PhD. defence in Sweden as an "opponent" was hugely interesting & intellectually stimulating. I met very cool scientists; reunited wt a friend after >10 years & celebrated the new Dr's success in a lovely winter wonderland. I even survived -9 degrees!!! 🥶
