Universities, at their very core, are institutions that value and protect freedom of expression. They are bastions of new ideas and discourse that will better society - not censorship and whitewashing. At what stage will UU stop acting like a branch of the 1960s' Unionist state?

Northwest Ireland - on the Southern side of the border - has now the fastest-growing innovation sector in Europe, outperforming Stuttgart, Catalonia and Prague. Atlantic Technological University is a big factor. Derry needs to be part of this - and free from Belfast-centred UU. independent.ie/business/techn…

We are in danger of falling further and further behind. An independent cross-border North West University will regenerate this entire region and provide a permanent bridge back into Europe.

Derry and Coleraine will spend the next generation paying off UU’s Belfast debt. We both need autonomous structures if we are to grow independent of the capital. It is scandalous that we are banned from having local decision-making/management. Time to write another book, Garrett?

UU is set to close Coleraine's number one civic asset tomorrow. Two weeks ago, UU stood and watched as a Derry landmark - neglected by it for years - was burned own. UU bankrupted the North's HE system building an unsanctioned campus in Belfast. It is time UU was dissolved.

July 31 1850, 175 years ago today, the Derry Journal carried an extended report on plans to open an independent university in Derry - and to fight Belfast attempts to steal the funding.

A funding shortfall has forced Derry City & Strabane District Council to redistribute City Deal cash to ensure that its most advanced project can be delivered. (Request for Stormont help rejected. Money moved from different City Deal project. Concerning?) belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/…

Solution - stop pandering to UU, cut it out of the City Deal entirely, and make it pay its own way like it has to in Belfast. Council is giving UU money to offset its Belfast losses, and when UU eventually leaves Derry, it will attempt to bill us for the favour.

Garrett Hargan It’s long past time to take a long hard look at the financial and investment capabilities available to the city. In the absence of a xborder think tank, local officials rely too much on special pleading, consultants selling templates, and civil servants.

A year ago today. The scandaI still refuses to go away. It is shameful that Derry is denied its own university, independent of Belfast, 175 YEARS ON. In years to come, Garrett Hargan's book will be compulsory reading for students of Stormont's discrimination west of the Bann.
