We need reporting not just to share what impacts disabled people in the wider world but also how the organisations that are meant to be supporting us work. I'm not obsessed that every reporter on disability be a disabled person, but we definitely need more. #AXSChat

I write Disability Debrief to put a “disability lens” on world news. For me this means connecting lived experience with wider issues of policy and activism. See more about what I mean: disabilitydebrief.org/debrief/world-… #AXSChat

A2 Sadly disability inclusion efforts get derailed due to the same kind of failings as many other sociopolitical initiatives. This is why we need journalistic investigation to uncover malpractice so that we can build a better way #AXSChat

Too much of disability discourse comes from people in the US/UK. I appreciate I'm another British white guy but in my work Disability Debrief I work hard to cover stories not told elsewhere and bring in authors from all over. #AXSChat

On Disability Debrief I share work from folk around the world: Raja on women with disabilities in Yemen disabilitydebrief.org/debrief/succes… Ida Putri on her journey to activism in Indonesia disabilitydebrief.org/debrief/bigger… whatnowanna (she/they) on accessible livelihoods in India disabilitydebrief.org/debrief/workin… #AXSChat

The first challenge is getting our foot - or wheel, or cane - in the door. Journalism opportunities are extremely limited. The answer is simple: support disabled journalists and their work. Money, clicks, it all counts. We get the media we pay attention to. #AXSChat

By the way another thing for folk interested in this is to look up Disability Justice Project, a unique project working with disabled journalists in the global south and coming out with brilliant documentaries and reporting #AXSChat

a4 starting from: how do i get hired? can/should i try to hide disabilities applying or working? what when readers or employer thinks one can’t be a reported because eg deaf/blind/autistic/wheelchair user etc? every story is a further struggle #axschat

Reporting and media are essential for democratic exchange. Transparency and accountability are especially needed in issues that affect marginalized populations. Too much has been done in the name of disabled people without us knowing anything about it. #AXSChat

Peter Torres Fremlin / @desibility.bsky.social Yes. And this lack of accountability reinforces exclusion and silences our voices. Investigative journalism has the power to challenge these dynamics, exposing hidden decisions and helping to ensure disabled people are not just consulted but leading the conversation. #AXSChat

This is tough one, I think we're all navigating how we use AI. AI is a great assistant, and I use it as such. But we need to be careful about letting it take over. In my own work, I prioritise hearing directly from disabled people. #AXSChat

Learning from twitter has shaped a lot of my life and career over the more than a decade I've been on here. Keeping up with disability twitter led to my current project writing about international news. But it's time to find new homes. Find me on Peter Torres Fremlin / @desibility.bsky.social.bsky.social
