Example of what happens when a mainstream economist discovers structural inequality (without 'discovering' the theories to explain it): very impressive empirical documentation of it + completely out-of-touch assumptions about how to fix it (taxation, cheap debt, human capital).

It’s great to have the trends. But it’s also unfortunate that mainstream (& increasingly even critical) economists only understand the empirics w/o a theory of how, why, source of it. This is where political economy framework master & where our intellectual curiosity must focus.

🎉 Very happy to share that our paper, with Surbhi Kesar , is now out in World Development ! We use panel data from India to track how workers move across different employment arrangements to identify dominant labour market trajectories. 🔗 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

India is not the 4th most equal country in the world. We re-did correct & comparable calculations: India ranks 176 (& not 4) out of 216 on income inequality. On calorie consumption inequality, it ranks 102 out of 185. I explain this in The Wire m.thewire.in/article/econom…
