During the mega-2015-2016 El Niño, temperature anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean were extremely prolonged–lasting almost 1 year on Kiritimati (Christmas Island, Republic of Kiribati). For reference, corals can bleach after only a few weeks of heat stress.
