This seems like the right take to me. The positive effects of enabling greater participation (at far lower cost to individuals and the taxpayer) by e.g., grad students, independent scholars, retired and underemployed scholars, scholars with mobility or immune issues are huge.

In fact, what this does is cause people like me to stop using Twitter entirely. There is no way I am going to migrate to the appalling Twitter app. So it looks like farewell. Yet another boneheaded move by ⁦Elon Musk⁩, I fear.
