Health is always a hot topic in a general election and in the last 24hrs there’s been lots of discussion around the growing use of private healthcare. While it’s not always easy to condense into quick soundbites, here’s a thread with just some of the facts…

Interesting polling from YouGov showing 7 in 10 people (68%) favour using the private sector to tackle NHS waiting lists We’re proud of how the sector are helping cut the NHS backlog - delivering 1 in 5 NHS elective ops + removing 1.5m people from NHS waiting lists in 2023

Using private sector capacity to get NHS waiting times down is Labour's third most popular manifesto pledge. A helpful reminder that whilst this issue can be controversial, most people don't mind who provides their care as long as it's good quality and free at the point of use.

100% agree with this from Alastair McLellan. The only point I'd make is that it's not just the NHS that needs a strong CQC it's the whole health and care system + their service users who collectively benefit from independent assessment and rating. hsj.co.uk/policy-and-reg…

IHPN's latest analysis shows that 1 in 5 NHS operations are now delivered by the independent sector, free at the point of use to patients. And in the first half of 2024 alone, this has removed almost 3/4 million people from the total NHS waiting list telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/1…

Very welcome news that @julianhartley1 has been confirmed as the new Care Quality Commission CEO A strong, independent regulator is a vital part of the health & care landscape and we look forward to working with Julian and supporting his efforts in getting the CQC back on track

Great to contribute to this Mail Online article on the importance of patient choice in the #NHS. Our research shows: - patients can ⬇️ their wait for care by 3 months by travelling just 25mins by 🚗 to a different provider, incl in the independent sector mailonsunday.co.uk/health/article…

Congratulations to The Private Healthcare Information Network, hospitals + consultants on reaching the ‘bronze’ milestone in delivering the #PrivateHealthcare Market Investigation Order. We'll continue to work with PHIN to promote transparency + compliance to help consumers make informed healthcare decisions.

Spot on. And from the perspective of resulting pressure on the NHS, private hospitals see 1m inpatients per year and over 3m outpatients. That could be 100's of 1000's more people added to the NHS waiting list, making it vv difficult to meet NHS waiting time commitments by 2029.
