We just submitted a paper on the discovery of a non-interacting, mass-gap (~3 M_sun) BH candidate (internally dubbed "The Unicorn" šŸ¦„) around a red giant ~460 pc away! Up on astro-ph now: arxiv.org/abs/2101.02212

A customary tweet to announce the commencement of my life as an island boy! Really excited to spend my next few years at UH Institute for Astronomy as an Astronomy graduate student starting this Fall! Living and working in Hawaii should be a treat!

If you're curious about what this system might sound like, we ended up sonifying the TESS light curve. See if you can hear when the system is at periastron! The TEOs also make an appearance.

The entire original goal of ASAS-SN was to produce a minimally-biased SN survey to compute rates. It has been a crazy decade, but UH Institute for Astronomy grad student Dhvanil Desai has finally done it: arxiv.org/abs/2306.11100 Check it out if you want to see the best nearby SNe Ia rate to date.

It's rare for a grad student paper to spark a new subfield—but this collab between UH Institute for Astronomy’s Colby Haggerty and the Shappee transient group might do just that, solving key mysteries in supernovae & kilonovae! Check it out! arxiv.org/abs/2504.15335 In it, Dhvanil Desai Dhvanil Desai
