Scott and his companions are now at over 9000 feet. The surface is worsening. Pulling the sledges is exhausting.

Scott’s relieved the second party of four men is keeping up better. Soon he must decide who will go to the Pole.

Scott knows his men are exhausted but rejoices that ‘we have caught up Shackleton’s dates’

Edgar Evans cuts his hand while repairing a sledge runner. The injury will seal his fate.

Scott’s cheerful. Only 170 miles to the Pole he tells his men and plenty of food left.

The tension builds. Everyone knows Scott’s about to announce who’s going to the Pole.

Scott says he’s sending back Teddy Evans, Lashley and Crean and taking Wilson, Edgar Evans, Bowers and Oates to the Pole.

Scott’s euphoric. ‘What castles one builds now hopefully that the Pole is ours’. But the seeds of the coming disaster are already present

Edgar Evans’ wounded hand isn’t healing. Bowers is exhausted. Oates’ feet hurt and his war wound is re-opening.

Problems fade. Today they pass the site of Shackleton’s most southerly camp.

A blizzard– Scott consoles himself the enforced rest will help his suffering companions who he praises in his diary

Jubilant Scott writes ‘RECORD’ in his diary as he and his men pass Shackleton’s farthest south and truly enter terra incognita.

The temperature rises. The sandy snow of the Polar plateau clogs the sledge runners. Manhauling is agony.

Scott writes ‘Another hard grind … About 74 miles from the Pole – can we keep this up? None of us has ever had such hard work’

Scott’s not sure they’ll make it to the Pole writing ‘It is going to be a close thing.’

Everybody is feeling the cold even though the temperature has risen. Why?

Oates especially is feeling the cold. Scott’s men don’t realise they’re starting to starve.
