1/ A thread about mutation and recombination in vertebrates and what we learned by studying three-generation pedigrees of zebra finches. Take home: the remarkable similarities between birds and mammals in many properties of these fundamental processes.

✨️ I’m excited to share my second-author paper encapsulating most of my PhD work, which is out today in Science Magazine 🥰❤️. A new long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) underlying sex chromosome dosage compensation in the lizard Anolis 🦎 #MAYEX! 🧵👇 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

My lab read this paper biorxiv.org/content/10.110… for journal club, and had some thoughts on the strong claims made about the number of signals of selection found. 1/

Widely observed negative correlation between recombination rate and TE abundance is usually interpreted as recombination rate being the "cause," influencing the efficacy of selection purging TEs. Yet, our recent study "flipped" this causality! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…… (1/5)

Clownfish evolution is so extraordinary that it can only be described with the voice of David Attenborough. Watch until the end—you won’t regret it! youtu.be/EJOmmlhc3y0

Ok, here we go: Much of my work concerns the history and return of scientific racism. I’ve written extensively about attempts to resurrect the shuffling corpse of race science and eugenics for many years. Bigotry dressed up as biology. 1/n

And here is my contribution to the Guardian and HOPE not hate's extensive report. If you know the history of eugenics, and scientific racism, it is galling to see it repeat and rhyme over and over again. Which is why it needs exposing. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Scientific editorials cannot be a platform for racists to spread their hatred. PNASNews , Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Springer Nature must react and withdraw all articles written by authors linked to the racist plot uncovered by The Guardian. theguardian.com/world/2024/oct…

Our study, "Reconstruction of the human amylase locus reveals ancient duplications seeding modern-day variation," has just been published in Science. This thread will provide a brief overview of how gene duplications have shaped modern variation in the amylase locus.

Kishore Kuchibhotla I disagree completely. The fight we’re having is about not about whether society values science as a concept, it’s about whether society values science as it currently exists as an enterprise. And the way to demonstrate that is not to circle the wagons but to show that we are
