I'm deeply disappointed that my MP, Catherine McKinnell MP chose not to attend the @DifferenceNE meeting with disabled constituents, a basic act of respect for the 18,106 disabled people in her constituency. 1/8

I’ve emailed her repeatedly, sharing how the PIP and Access to Work cuts would threaten my ability to stay in the job I love. I got stock replies about “getting disabled people into work.” I already am working full-time. So are many disabled PIP claimants. 2/8

When John Healey was corrected live by Martin Lewis on Good Morning Britain being told PIP is not an out-of-work benefit, I hoped Labour would listen. Instead, the government is doubling down on this misleading and dangerous rhetoric. 3/8

These reforms are devastating. Buried in the consultation are proposed cuts to Access to Work too, vital support that keeps many of us in employment. These changes won’t help disabled people into work, they’ll push us out of it. 4/8

Catherine isn’t just any MP — she’s a Minister for Education, with a brief for SEND. How can she support cuts that will plunge disabled children, families, and young people into poverty? 5/8

If I hadn’t received DLA (PIP’s predecessor) as a young disabled person, I would never have been able to afford the extra costs I face as a disabled person to stay out of poverty when I was too ill to work or start my career. Now they want to take it away. 6/8

Nine Labour MPs in the North East have come out against this bill. Why hasn’t she? This bill doesn’t just fail disabled people. It divides us into deserving and undeserving. It is unjust and dangerous. And it is a betrayal of what The Labour Party is meant to stand for. 7/8

Disabled people deserve better than to be ignored, divided and pushed into poverty. I urge @CatMcKinnell to reconsider her position, start listening to the people she represents and evaluate how these cuts align with the values of 'a party for working people' 8/8

Labour has a Disability problem. I don't think many at a senior level realise that, it's hard for anyone to admit prejudice. Nevertheless it's there in their language and behaviours. They can change this, but they have to want to do it.
