Huge thanks to Doctors’ Association UK for inviting me to give the closing keynote of the Jenny Vaughan Memorial Conference. I spoke on a subject dear to my heart - the insidious "kindwashing" of UK medicine. Is it really a doctor's formal duty - as the now GMC insists - to be "kind"? 🧵

The new duty to 'be kind' is a stick to beat doctors with. It means that a doctor can deliver immaculate care, but be done because a patient objects to the tone of a tough conversation. A doctor can be thoroughly professional but be done for reporting a safety incident. 1/

The medical students I teach hate the way they’re allocated to their 1st job after graduation: it’s a kind of lottery system. This study shows just how much they dislike it & how much damage it does to the way they view the career. Hope someone’s listening.
