1 year ago, the nursing community lost an incredible light. Michael Andrew Odell was more than just a nurse who tragically died by su!c!de at age 27.  Michael was a son, a brother, an uncle, and loved by many friends around the world.  Remember, You are not alone.

Healthcare workers are called “resilient,” & “heroic” for continuing to work through impossible circumstances in unsupported environments. We are expected to bounce back after exposure to trauma that is compounded over time.

The research surrounding healthcare worker mental health is limited but what we do know is that we are struggling to cope without a safety net & this expectation of resilience.

Even if we do seek help for our mental health, if our environments continue to expose us to harm, it only becomes a bandaid to a deeper wound. Healthcare workers deserve support.

I am at a loss for words. How many more residents, physicians, humans need to take their own lives before people start to listen? Dr. Nakita Mortimer, you deserved more.

Nakita was a classmate of mine, and an inspiration to all those who knew and worked with her. She deserved better, and was working to improve the lives of all residents and trainees. RIP Dr. Nakita Mortimer.

This is my dear friend, Nakita. Nakita and I were medical school classmates and both interns in New York City. Nakita tragically took her own life on May 26. She is such a beautiful soul. She was so fun to be around. She was intelligent, charismatic, and confident. (1/x)

We are heartbroken to hear of yet another loss of a brilliant & bright resident physician. Resident physicians deserve to be nurtured in training, not exploited. We believe in a world where no clinician feels alone & feel safe enough to be able to reach out when they need support

Physicians in training deserve to be nurtured & supported, not exploited & met with retaliation for being human. Healthcare is in dire straights & our brightest clinicians in training are suffering silently. We have to do better.

Reminder: You are not at fault for your environment or how your environment impacts the care you provide. You are trying your best through the impossible. And that is more than enough. 💜

Togetherness is possible 365 days a year. Gratitude can be extended 365 days a year. May we find ways to build meaningful community every day we are offered the chance to.
