The signing of the Mechanization MoU between FMARD, NAMEL and John Deere USA tractors today, is part of the Federal Government's effort to improve farmers' access to mechanized agricultural implements to increase yields per hectare and enhance national food security.

I addressed a Press Conference this morning to express our profound joy and appreciation for the new policy of lending to the agriculture & manufacturing sectors, put in place by the Central Bank of Nigeria, as part of the efforts of this administration to strengthen the economy.

We have been advocating a low single digit interest rate for many years, convinced that the outrageous interest rates which have ruled the sectors for the last three decades, have to a great extent, been responsible for the slow growth of our economy.

We thank the Central Bank of Nigeria and the committee of Bankers for listening to our appeals and wish to assure them that this bold and revolutionary policy initiative is appreciated by farmers, other stakeholders in the agricultural sector and manufacturers alike.

I see this as the first major step we are taking towards reversing the horrible damage done to Africa by the Structural Adjustment Programme of the mid-eighties. We congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari, the CBN and the Committee of Bankers for this our policy initiative.

We urge all borrowers to strive to repay loans and we, Fed Min of Agric & Food Security will join hands to ensure that farmers repay loans granted them as there will be no more excuses. Under these new conditions, our youths, women and smallholder farmers can now access credit to fulfill their dreams.

HIGHLIGHT: Encomiums as Permanent Secretary Fed Min of Agric & Food Security, Dr. Bukar Hassan retires after a meritorious service. At a ceremony presided over by HMA Audu Ogbeh & HMS Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri PhD, the outgoing PS was described as a rare specie and unanimously praised for his integrity & outstanding legacies.

Dr. Bukar Hassan who has completed a full public service of 35 years, today handed over the mantle to the next most senior officer in the ministry, the Director of Finance & Accounts - Alh. Idris Mamman.
