This image by John Burn-Murdoch, shared by Adrian Boyle yesterday is probably the most pertinent explanation of why the NHS has deteriorated since 2010. We have been told we can reduce acute beds because patients will receive care in their homes, whilst social care is annihilated.

OMG she’s only gone & done it 😱 Liz Truss has put fossil fuel loving, deregulation-obsessed Jacob Rees Mogg in charge of both energy & climate crises -he is not a serious person & this is not a serious Government. Can only hope he wakes up in time to recognise scale of emergency

NEW: income inequality in US & UK is so wide that while the richest are very well off, the poorest have a worse standard of living than the poorest in countries like Slovenia ft.com/content/ef2654… Essentially, US & UK are poor societies with some very rich people. A thread:

🚨 Clarion Housing - Eastfields Estate 2022 This tenant stopped me in the road yesterday and asked her to visit her home. Turns out she’s my neighbour and has been complaining since 2018 (when she moved in) It’s so bad, mushrooms have started growing. I spoke to mum 👇🏽🤦🏽‍♂️:

This is an awful decision. Our health is based on so much more than the delivery of healthcare. The white paper was the chance to be bold, improve health (which in turns improves wealth) & reduce inequality. Bitterly disappointing to see this thrown away theguardian.com/politics/2022/…

Ian Higginson once again saying it how it is in her final Presidential Newsletter. Thank you Katherine for everything you have done over the last 3 years - you have been a fantastic leader in these very difficult times.

Have you noticed the weather? It’s warm enough to be summer. I find this more frightening than the economic mess the country is in, more frightening than my cancer.

Keir Starmer has said too many people from overseas are working for the NHS. I wonder if he knows the names Amged el-Hawrani, Adel el-Tayar and Habib Zaidi. They were the first three doctors to die from covid while working for the NHS in this country.

The only way NHS staff could be more pissed off with Matt Hancock going into the jungle is if he’d accidentally taken the CD keys with him.

“It was a case of having to constantly reject sub-par kit that was panic bought by people with no idea what was required and, crucially, were not personally at risk” - this is the very essence of what causes devastating moral injury in emergency response personnel and soldiers

I think we’re on schedule for your annual reminder - the second you charge a penny for programmes that review applications for your profession, you narrow access and you widen inequality. You’re selling knowledge and keeping it out of the reach of those who can’t afford.

Iain Beardsell Royal College of Emergency Medicine Been hugely impressed by Ian Higginson Ian Higginson 🌈 etc who are doing a brilliant job in ‘saying it as it is’. We must all keep highlighting the urgency, scandal & seriousness of the situation & challenge, at every level, anyone who tries to infer otherwise. Ignored for too long.

Excellent frank article about our professional lives at the moment in EM. Our staff and our patients deserve better. apple.news/AmlJZ-CblRca3-…

Anybody who cares about our country should read this week’s Economist magazine about declining life expectancy in the U.K. compared to major European countries. It’s all about poverty, inequality and under-resourced public health.

Life as an EM Consultant these days: a question or unfixable problem every 2.4 seconds for 10hrs straight - seriously how are we meant do a whole career of this and stay sane/healthy? 😴

Today is Emergency Medicine day. Thank you to all the clinicians looking after patients today. It’s a tough career, and not for the faint hearted, but always interesting and rewarding. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else
