An Ebola outbreak was declared in Kampala District, Uganda at the end of January. With any epidemic response, volunteers are the backbone of our Red Cross Red Crescent response. The Uganda Red Cross Society trained and deployed 320 local volunteers—trusted community members.

It was a sad privilege to give the keynote speech at UN Humanitarian’s event on this afternoon – ‘#NotATarget: Protecting Aid Workers in a Shifting Humanitarian Landscape’. A record number of humanitarian aid workers were killed last year; we lost 32 across the IFRC network –





We believe in the power of community and locally-led action. Here is an excellent example from Kyrgyzstan. Four days on, communities are still reeling. With soaring temperatures, collapsed infrastructure, and overwhelmed healthcare systems. Myanmar Red Cross teams are providing lifesaving first aid, search and rescue, and clean water — often in areas already affected by conflict.


Very happy to see the CROIX-ROUGE GABONAISE inaugurate its new listening and psychosocial support center this Saturday. A big congratulations to the 20 volunteers who received their certificates after completing training in psychological #firstaid!
