An Ebola outbreak was declared in Kampala District, Uganda at the end of January. With any epidemic response, volunteers are the backbone of our Red Cross Red Crescent response. The Uganda Red Cross Society trained and deployed 320 local volunteers—trusted community members.

It was a sad privilege to give the keynote speech at UN Humanitarian’s event on this afternoon – ‘#NotATarget: Protecting Aid Workers in a Shifting Humanitarian Landscape’. A record number of humanitarian aid workers were killed last year; we lost 32 across the IFRC network –

To say I am heartbroken doesn’t even begin to describe the depth of sorrow I feel. Far too many of our colleagues and friends have been taken from us. They should have been protected. Their courage should have been honored. Their memory must never be forgotten.

We believe in the power of community and locally-led action. Here is an excellent example from Kyrgyzstan. Trained Kyrgyzstan Red Crescent volunteers contribute to epidemic prevention in their community supported through the partnership of @IFRC and EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺 👇ifrc.org/article/protec…

Four days on, communities are still reeling. With soaring temperatures, collapsed infrastructure, and overwhelmed healthcare systems. Myanmar Red Cross teams are providing lifesaving first aid, search and rescue, and clean water — often in areas already affected by conflict.
