PICANet Audit data presented by Hannah Buckley - Senior Research Statistician at #espnic2024 - long stays in PICUs in UK are increasing, suggesting more medical complexity and more requirements on services. Important data! (My phone camera playing up, or I'm failing at tech 🧓, but got a good photo now!)

UNICEF has called Gaza the most dangerous place in the world to be a child. The risk factors in Gaza were already high before this war, and now children are battling life-changing injuries, amputated limbs, and the trauma of losing their parents, loved ones, homes, and schools.

Delighted our research on the impact of child poverty, pollution, and ethnicity on mortality risk in PICU won Young Investigator Award! Sarah E Seaton 🏳️‍🌈 Prof P Ramnarayan (Ram) the most excellent supervisors. Now to focus on identifying ways to reduce these risks. #HealthEquity #ChildHealth

1/4: UK #PedsICU admit the sickest children. Should we expect different admission rates for children from different ethnic backgrounds? Does deprivation influence the risk of admission? How about pollution? Find out from Hannah Mitchell's excellent research: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

2/4: PICANet Audit national data (2008-21) showed: risk of unplanned #PedsICU higher in Asian and Black compared to White children; children from most deprived areas are over-represented in #PedsICU; & unplanned respiratory admissions commoner from the most polluted areas.

3/4: SUMMARY: There is evidence of increased incidence of PICU admission in children of Asian and Black ethnicity and children residing in more deprived areas. WHY?: Reasons for these findings are not clear, and much more work and public engagement is needed to understand this.

Contribution of ethnicity, deprivation and air pollution to PICU admissions in the UK When restricting to unplanned respiratory admissions and ventilated patients only, increasing pollution level was associated with increased incidence of PICU admission thelancet.com/journals/eclin…
