Fully agree. Dublin urgently needs a Directly Elected Mayor, accountable to its citizens, with real power and a real budget. This is the norm for major global cities. Government need set the date for a plebiscite. It's time we freed our capital city to live up to its potential.

This is a weak excuse for refusing to give Dubliners the choice as to whether they want an accountable directly elected Mayor with real power and a real budget. Which is the norm in major global cities. The Limerick example shows it can work in Ireland too thetimes.com/article/d49f66…

One year on Mount Street remains barricaded in ugly steel fences, promoting dumping and dereliction. They are an embarrassing scar on the city, and a visible symbol of the ongoing dysfunction and chaos from the IPO, which is operating unsafely at a completely unsuitable location.

"Dublin will suffer as long as there is no one directly responsible for its running. Socially, economically and culturally, the city’s failure to develop coherently is of significance to the rest of the country."

For over a year Mount Street has been barricaded in ugly steel fences, at a cost of €4,000 per week. They are a scar on the city promoting dumping and dereliction, and a visible symbol of the ongoing dysfunction & chaos from the IPO, operating unsafely at an unsuitable location.

A great day for Irish science, and credit to James Lawless for pushing for CERN membership for many years and making it a reality today as Minister. It's a long time coming - the first campaign to join I recall was back when I was studying particle physics myself in the last century!
