The dual advocacy role of geriatric medicine - opening up access to care and protecting from harm of excessive medicalisation in parallel - not Janus faced David Oliver (also on Blue Sky) #BGSconf

Thank you for the invite. And the very warm welcome. And for giving up your time on a warm early summer evening. Excuse my being slightly unnerved at finding myself back in Coláiste Éamann RĂs - Cork City, a full 31 years since I left.

We’re all very proud of our colleagues in the Cork University Hospitals Stroke team who won the SimStars competition yesterday evening in ASSERT Centre, UCC. for their simulation of communication in the setting of post-stroke dysphasia and how to figure out what matters most to patients.

- Renal patients don’t get “some dialysis” - Cancer patients don’t get “a bit of chemotherapy” - Septic patients don’t get “a few antibiotics” Rehabilitation after a stroke is dose dependent. It gets people out of hospitals, back to their homes, their families, their lives.

Rehabilitation can fix the existential problem of 1/3 of patients getting sicker in hospital. Rehabilitation in tandem with, and especially after, an acute care episode can unblock our hospitals. Not “step down”. Not “convalescence”. Not “transitional care”. Rehabilitation.

Lovely acknowledgment here in EchoLive.ie, not just of my consultant colleague Dr. Kirstyn James and the team in the Cork University Hospitals stroke service, but also the crucial role played by the National Ambulance Service 🇮🇪🚑 in acute stroke care.
