Now we know why Rishi Sunak refuses to negotiate with NHS staff. He wants the strikes to go ahead, so he can blame doctors and nurses for his failure. #PMQs

Physician associates who assist doctors in GP surgeries and hospitals will now be known as assistants. Health Secretary Wes Streeting says this "better describes the role that they do". Read more ➡️ trib.al/aKsx2Nx

Today’s talks with the Health Secretary were constructive, and we believe there’s a window of opportunity - albeit small - in which the Government can put forward a strong enough proposal to prevent strikes. Full statement: bma.org.uk/bma-media-cent…

Also, I'm going to be very blunt here - I want justice. There are institutions that were supposed to act as stewards of the medicine and medical profession who enabled this situation. People who tried to argue that the "associate" title was appropriate and not confusing.

The introduction of Physician Associates in the NHS has raised serious concerns among some of our members. We support several changes the Leng Review has proposed, but there's still work to be done to define how PAs work with our specialties. Read more: rcr.ac.uk/news-policy/la…

🚨 Senior NHS managers are to be regulated by the HCPC with a barring list to prevent those guilty of misconduct from working again in the NHS. Wes Streeting says this "will slam the door in the face of unsuitable managers"

This is blatantly unsafe. Our strikes have senior doctors covering emergency care. They cannot also cover elective lists. Impossible to be in two places at once. NHS England will put patients at risk with this approach. All trusts must cancel elective activity to avoid harm.

@medicalmodelwithabriochebun Wes Streeting The Leng review NHS England GMC Prof Colin R Melville Renaming needs reopening the PA/AA order, and I don’t think the GMC can change until then; but they could issue a statement confirming they accept Leng in full and they will amend it once order has changed Whilst we’re reopening it though, we could and should change GMC to HCPC

We've written to NHS England with concerns about inadequate planning ahead of possible strike action later this week. Attempts to run non-urgent services with fewer doctors risk patient safety. It's imperative that Trusts postpone work to protect urgent and emergency care.

At today's RDC meeting, we’ve voted to go ahead with strike action. Last week when we met Wes Streeting we were open to finding solutions to restore pay and improve working conditions. Today, we still do not have a credible offer on the table Dr Melissa Ryan 🦀 Dr Ross Nieuwoudt

Thank you to Baroness Walmsley for highlighting the current shortfall of radiology consultants and its impact on patients waiting to receive diagnoses and begin treatment. Our latest census found a 29% shortfall of clinical radiology consultants, forecast to rise to 39% 2029 📈

Dear Wes Streeting… What really undermines our movement is a Labour government that turns its back on workers and lashes out at unions instead of listening to them. This is a defining moment. Stop attacking those who keep our public services running.

New doctors are paid less than their assistants. We are only asking for doctors to start on £4/hr more (still less than PAs…) A starting wage of £23/hr for a qualified doctor with £100,000 student debt is not unreasonable. Wes Streeting agreed when in opposition.

It’s utterly appalling that newly qualified doctors - after 5 years of training - are paid less than “physician assistants” - who have just 2 years of training.

The derogation granted to Kings College Hospital for a Radiology SpR, has been revoked for both today and tomorrow. This is due to a false submission of accurate staffing levels. Either local management were unaware they had sufficient cover, or they deliberately misled us.
