On this day 98 years ago Countess Markievicz died. The poor of Dublin honoured her kindness to them - 300,000 attended her funeral procession from the Pillar Room at the Rotunda to the Republican Plot at Glasnevin. We honour her.

Countess Markievicz died #OTD, 15 July 1927, in Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital in Dublin. We recently unveiled a special display about her which centres on her War of Independence prayer book which she transformed into a memorial to her fallen comrades during her imprisonment.

I love fragments and oddities like this which help us build a richer, layered picture of the Irish catholic experience, home and abroad, and the great diaspora. Also btw, wow what a painting.

This is actually a fascinating document, with its rich cast of personnel and organisations; it’s implied hierarchies and crisp sense of expertise.

One of Dublin’s finest stair halls can be found at Newman House, 86 St. Stephen’s Green, home to MoLI – Museum of Literature Ireland. Most likely designed by Robert West c.1765, it features late Rococo decoration unusually incorporated in a groin vault, and a Portland and black stone chequered floor.

The GPO is looking magnificent since removal of ugly canvas banners advertising the GPO Witness History exhibition and the windows have been newly repainted an appropriate purple-brown. As ⁦Office of Public Works⁩ advances feasibility studies, the GPO Museum is open Mon-Sat. Do visit!

Fenian leader James Stephens travelled to America and throughout Europe seeking support for the Irish republican cause. His visit aimed to strengthen ties with the Fenian Brotherhood in the United States and to secure funding and political backing for renewed efforts in Ireland.
