Considerations for escalating tariffs—they are transfers like other policies, yes. But tariffs do tend to have very broad impacts downstream (and upstream) as opposed to the ideal targeted “industrial policy” argued for today.

Noah Kaufman Confused by what article says about economists. It seems the vast majority of economists oppose tariffs, vast majority of groups who benefit from tariffs support tariffs, and a small but brave group of economists cautiously make a case for ratcheting them down to rational levels.

Many new climate policies are experiments—and experiments need evaluation! Also, authors note, learning varies by technology and instrument. This is important as US tries quickly scale up industries facing stiff global competition.

Cool result but I’m skeptical that one can clearly compare information rates across languages like Japanese and English due to the large differences in contextual assumptions.

Brad Setser Keith Bradsher Chinese NEV gross margins averaged 21% in 2023 (14% nom-subsidized) and are up ~1-2% in 2024 on higher volumes. This compares with 1.7% in the US despite higher subsidy levels (it’d be -22% without subsidies). So this is an evidence-free, vibes-based claim.

I was also in Beijing over the election and agree 100% with Lauri + researcher. There are ripples thru the global climate community but discussions quickly returned to the work for transition. I look forward to getting back to the states to put heads together on moving forward.

Based on my cursory read I am trying to find the daylight between these points and conventional trade policy at the end of the Biden administration. Anyone enlighten me?

Indonesia’s new president has committed to phase out coal and all fossil power in 15 years. If this is where you’re starting from, with less than 1 GW of wind and solar on the grid—that is the definition of ambitious.

Amidst thorny geopolitics, countries have stitched together a new goal on global climate finance at #COP29. The deal is historic and reflects the resilience of climate multilateralism. Yet it is also inadequate. 1/4
