The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley began on Oct. 1, 1964 when Jack Weinberg was arrested for sitting in Sproul Plaza at a table supporting the Congress of Racial Equality. 3,000 students surrounded the police car. A 32-hour stand-off ensued, people speaking from the car's roof.
