This article by the great Hanif Kureishi - on Powellite racism and the "brief thrill of superiority & hatred" he gave to Brits in postcolonial decline - is a decade old. But it's so lucid & evergreen... a beautifully eloquent analysis of something so ugly. theguardian.com/books/2014/dec…

This is not how the Upper House of Parliament should look in a modern democracy. Not least one in which less than half of the population associate with the country's 'national religion', and just 12% are affiliated with the Church of England.

Sorry to be obsessive - but this is really bizarre. Yesterday's Amnesty report denouncing Israel for genocide is not even among the 7 headlines on the BBC's Israel-Gaza page. / 1

Few buildings are standing in northern Gaza in the midst of rubble, and they’re systematically being detonated by the Israeli military with the aim of not leaving intact anything the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians it has been expelling can return to

The subtly changing Camp Coffee label over the years. Camp's initial label (founded in 1876) showed an Indian man serving a seated British soldier (Gordon Highlander). The tray disappeared in the 1950s. In 2006, the British & Indian characters eventually shared a coffee together.

Israeli forces have bombed the UN-run, Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz School, in Gaza's Khan Younis. The attack continues Israel’s repeated pattern of targeting former school buildings, with some sheltering up to 65,000 displaced Palestinians.

Love this - Steven Hunter, a fan with terminal cancer, was invited to meet Howe the day before the Brentford game and the first thing he said was "You've got to be starting Tonali the morra". He did, and Tonali scored after 9 minutes. #NewcastleUnited bbc.co.uk/news/videos/cr…

Just saw a YouTube ad for Grammarly. I can't really see how what they are suggesting students use isn't cheating, according to conventional understandings of academic honesty - i.e. submitting work that is genuinely your own.

Very funny indeed that the Revd Nigel Biggar is up for a peerage, in recognition of his many achievements in whining to the Telegraph about how professional historians of empire are discourteous to him Online and that's a lot like Germany under the Nazis when you think about it

I've decided not to use this account any more. It's a shame - over the years I've made so many brilliant connections here, come across so much amazing stuff, and learned a great deal. But staying on Twitter/X is untenable. If you need to contact me, please do so by email. Thanks.
