So needed: red algae is one of the first eukaryotic lineages to evolve #multicellularity, but genomic data is still scarce. Here a a chromosome-level genome assembly of Bostrychia moritziana is presented. The authors find a significant genome size expansion in Bostrychia compared

Yay! 🔥🦠After 3 yrs of work, the Imachi lab managed to cultivate 2 new Asgard archaea from the closest group to eukaryotes: Flexarchaeum & Margulisarchaeum (in honor of Lynn Margulis) Eukaryotes' closest relatives are internally simple syntrophic archaea biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

First study from the lab is out! We describe ApuRs, a new family of microbial rhodopsins unique from apusomonads. ApuRs represent the first anion-conducting rhodopsin channels that can be controlled by UV light, offering potential as new optogenetic tools. doi.org/10.1101/2025.0…

Could animals have originally evolved by cell aggregation? we believe they could!. And here we have two publications that provide food-for-thought on this issue. Two different relatives of animals aggregating and deploying key multicellular genes. Nice collaboration with

Is "everything everywhere" for marine microbes? 🦠🧬Our new study says no! We found #protists 🔬 show stronger and more recent genetic divisions across oceans than animals and plants 🐠🌱. Check out our preprint on @bioRxiv! 🔗 doi.org/10.1101/2025.0…
