Everyone talks about German losing the genitive case, but I think it's more remarkable that nouns are *also* losing the dative and accusative endings. The system is being reduced to articles and pronouns, it seems.

"Every country has its national anthem" can be expressed in Cantonese as: gok3 go3 g(w)ok3 gaa1 jau5 gok3 go3 g(w)ok3 gaa1 ge3 g(w)ok3 go1 各個國家有各個國家嘅國歌 which sounds like a chicken clucking 🤣

10 июля умер Эндрю Вест - один из лучших людей, которых я знал. Честный, прямой, верный, мудрый, ранимый. Лучший знаток древних письменностей, создатель множества шрифтов, точно имеющий дар слышать мысли их создателей, давно ушедших. Теперь ушёл и он. babelstone.co.uk

I am utterly shocked and saddened by the news of Andrew West‘s untimely passing. He was a huge inspiration, an impressive scholar, and a kind and generous person. FAMA PER ORA VOLAT SPIRITUS ASTRA TENET

Andrew West inspired new generations to study the long dead writing systems and langauges of Asia and I'm forever grateful for his research and resources. ᢀᠣᠸᠠ ᠮᠠᢏᢈ ᢒᠠᢑᠮᠧ ᢀᠾᠤᠤ

The best of the genre has to be Wuxi. It literally means "no tin" but actually has a Xishan (tin mountain) and used to produce plenty of tin

Egas Moniz Bandeira ᠡᡤᠠᠰ ᠮᠣᠨᠢᠰ ᠪᠠᠨᡩ᠋ᠠᠶᠢᠷᠠ Egas: a very interesting paper. Thank you for bringing attention to it. Years ago, I translated an oral history piece by Zhao Hang, great grandson of Zhao Erfeng (“The Butcher of Lhasa”) who is mentioned in this paper. Maybe of passing interest? chinaheritage.net/journal/stayin…
