Excited to share our latest work led by Joshua Soto Ocaña & Elliot Friedman in mBio today! Together with Gary Wu's team, we suggest metals may be an important nutritional factor shaping early life microbial ecology. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

This human study explores the potential role of calprotectin (babies have a ton!) and metal limitation in the early life and also shows the impact feeding method has on metal levels in the infant gut. We show that formula fed babies harbor much higher levels of metals in stool.

This study was a really fun collaborative effort between my team (Joshua Soto Ocaña, Orlaith Keenan, Nile Bayard), Gary Wu's team (Elliot Friedman), the IGRAM infant cohort team CHOP Research, Eric Skaar, Matt Munneke, Will Beavers, Ceylan Tanes and others!
