Umatilla County wants to open a larger shelter and transitional housing center to serve the area's houseless population. The problem: The only way to get to the site at a former gravel pit is to walk 1.5 miles along a four-lane highway. opb.org/article/2023/0…

This shelter site is emblematic of the many disagreements over housing Oregon is going to have in coming years. Most people in Oregon want to see less unsheltered camping and more low-income or transitional housing. Most Oregonians also don't want it near their homes.

Some professional news: Today is my last day at The Oregonian. I'm headed to OPB to be politics editor. I can’t wait to work with the badass politics team. Coming home to where I started as an intern 17 years ago is a trip. I'm pumped! (1)
