At ⁦The Nation⁩, we’re urging New Yorkers to rank Zohran Mamdani as their first choice in next month’s mayoral primary. thenation.com/article/politi…

This happens in some fields. It’s far from ideal. But it’s mostly internal to academia & its priorities. So it’s better than the distortion of academic priorities engineered by self-interested billionaires funding scores of jobs & programmes to override & muddle scholarly debates

This demand from American students that their professors share and express the same political views they hold seems strange, new, ultimately impossible, and will make college very boring. nytimes.com/2025/06/06/mag…

I had a brief liberal phase in my early twenties because Anglo academia promised an improvement over Marxisant Italian academic feudalism. Then I went to a fancy British university and was quickly cured. I mean, the improvement was there, but it was not at all what was promised.

Correct. I’d be less of a realist gadfly if this attitude became more prevalent among political philosophers. But, alas, duties and other morality system accoutrements are irresistibile to lovers of neat inferences, not to mention the post-Protestant sensibility of Anglo academia

Sadly I never met Helen in person while we overlapped in Amsterdam but we had good exchanges about the city & the sociology of academia. Her contribution to the latter is one of many aspects of her legacy I hope will endure. Prestige bias is real. It distorts academic life, badly

People think I'm biased against Jeff Bezos, but here's F. Caraceni Sartoria, widely considered one of the best bespoke tailoring houses in the world, commenting on Bezos's wedding suit. "The most terrible, frightening, horrible tuxedo ever seen in my life. I'm really suffering"
