It was such an honor to collaborate with water districts throughout OR on a summary of the water infrastructure impacts and recovery from the 2020 Labor Day fires (Medford Water, EUG Water & Electric, and Detroit). Check it out in American Water Works Association: awwa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10…

NEW: Drone footage shows the devastating aftermath of the LA fires which have destroyed thousands of homes. At this time, five people are deceased, over 2,000 structures have burned down and at least 130,000 residents are under evacuation order. Unfortunately, forecasters warn

Loss of access to water occurs after many fires because the fire is overloading fire suppression capabilities and causing depressurization of the system. This will result in water contamination post-fire. nytimes.com/live/2025/01/0…

The newly sparked #KennethFire is exploding in size in West Hills, LA County, and is quickly approaching homes. The fire is moving extremely fast and a new potential spot fire just started across Highway 101. Santa Ana winds are expected to increase up to 50 mph tonight.

Unsafe drinking water alerts coming out of areas impacted by the LA fires. Reports of lack of access to water from firefighters could mean system depressurization sucking in ash and soot from the fire itself to the water system.

Wind-driven fires such as those that we saw this week around LA overwhelm fire suppression capabilities all the time. This occurred during many previous fires, including throughout the state of Oregon in 2020, causing depressurization of the water systems.

Can homes be 100% fireproof? It depends on what you mean by fireproof and what the fire demand is on the structure! I spoke with AirTalk answering listener questions about fire safe building construction practices. Engineering - OSU npr.org/podcasts/38144…

Timely throwback to the work we did in fall 2023 with Brad Wham and Fire Safety Research Institute. We found negative pressure during wildfires due to large demands on the water system can cause significant amounts of ash and soot to be sucked into water distribution systems. Stay tuned for the paper!

New paper alert! The results of fire testing glulam beam-to-column connections is finally out. This was a wonderful collaboration with Sujit Bhandari and Arijit Sinha at the NRC Canada. The research was funded by USDA ARS. Check it out: doi.org/10.1061/JSENDH…
