You're asked to process single-cell sequencing data, what should you do first? Before downloading the data, it is *crucial* to understand the structure of the reads. Where are the barcodes? UMIs? Genomics features?

One method for understanding the read structure is a seqspec specification. A seqspec file allows data generators to link FASTQ files to specific sequenced elements leaving the guesswork out of preprocessing.

The seqspec tool and file make it easy to visualize relevant sequenced features. With one command, multimodal DOGMAseq data can be understood.
