I love the old weather lores and proverbs because they are usually true - ā€˜March, in like a lion, out like a rabid bear on cocaine’.

As all good farmers know you have until you hear the cuckoo to drill your spring crops. So there’s some good news and some bad news out there on the BTO Cuckoo tracking website.

Just a little dribble before midnight ( move on you would-be ā€˜ Carry On ā€˜ film script writers ) puts our April total rainfall to 41mm. All very regular - thank the Lord. #driestspotinbritain

Someone once wrote that May was the month ā€˜when anything seemed possible even a decent crop of peas!’ Nb - I added the bit about peas.

Good day yesterday cycling 100 miles largely in arable Essex. Reminded me of the old lore ā€˜In May everything seems possible’.

Enjoyed myself at Cereals yesterday as much as I enjoyed the first one in back the eighties but given it seems to be in terminal decline I wonder if I’ll be going to the last one.

Feeling very on trend with my wild flower/pea bi-crop. Mushy peas with a hint of opium coming to all good Chip shops very soon.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Oliver Walston. Great company and charismatic to the core. From ā€˜Send a tonne to Africa’ to ā€˜Against the Grain’ he made the world a more thoughtful and colourful place. It was a privilege to have known him. RIP

Not exactly thrashing well but I think we will start bringing the wheat harvest home. Dusting off the pub/Twitter manual I’m drawn to Rule 7. When calculating average yields always discard low yielding parts of the field as not to properly representative of the whole.

Early lunch as we wait for the wheat to get below 16%. A thought occurs. I have combined this field every year for forty years. It would have been arable cropped for at least forty years before that. But next year this long history of food production is broken as it’s in SFI-NUM

Wheat harvest done so we look to the skies with a new lens. I’ll say this very quietly and try to keep it to 140 characters because I know these statements can cause serious unrest but with the sugar beet wilting we really could do with some ra
