New pre-print(s) from the Sternberg Lab in collaboration with Leifu Chang! We uncover an unprecedented molecular mechanism of CRISPR-Cas12f-like proteins, which drive RNA-guided transcription independently of canonical promoter motifs. Full story here: tinyurl.com/mr3fd493

Here's a problem we never had to think about before: when federal employees behave like masked thugs, it's easy for crooks to pretend to be them.

Curious to hear about the dire wolf affair now that the dust has settled a bit? Check out my latest on Substack, where I break down that controversy and link to lots of other interesting happenings: scifinow.substack.com/p/the-round-up….

OpenAI catches a lot of shit because it promised the public so much and is now falling short. But don't forget that it remains miles ahead of: • Meta • xAI • Microsoft • DeepSeek which all get off light because they've only ever promised little or nothing!

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. Senator, let’s be honest. RFK Jr. abruptly fired trusted vaccine experts and replaced them with longtime opponents of vaccination. This wasn’t about balance; it was about pushing an agenda he’s clung to for decades. And it’s only getting more dangerous.

The Senate just voted 99-1 to drop the OpenAI/Google plan to ban state AI regulation for a decade. To my AI safety friends working there: why don't you openly criticize your companies for pushing this shit?

Happy to share that I'm continuing my research on bridge recombinases as a scientist in Patrick Hsu lab at the Arc Institute! I am looking for a motivated post-grad to work with me as a research associate. If you are interested or know of someone, please use the link below:

I didn't want to post on Grok safety since I work at a competitor, but it's not about competition. I appreciate the scientists and engineers at xAI but the way safety was handled is completely irresponsible. Thread below.

The dataset behind this famous chart on the declining cost of genome sequencing has had its NIH funding cut. It tracked progress towards & beyond an ambitious goal ($1000 genome) that succeeded. Could any funders rescue the project? Sharing this would be very appreciated.

🎯 The internet is riddled w/ strawman arguments of this form. Usually 'belief A and belief B conflict with each other but are both common in group C'. Find me an example of someone who thinks both and I'll believe you!

Our Issue 07 launch party in San Francisco was a smashing success. 🏏 Thanks to everyone who came and played Biology Trivia. Winning teams got copies of our DNA books, hats, and posters. It was a really fun time! See you in the fall, in Boston, for the next one. :)

Congrats to Asimov Press on Issue 7! Launch party last night was a blast. As a biologist and washed up quizzer, a biology trivia night was right up my alley.
