Here’s an important msg from a farmer in Cork who wants a much more ambitious #CAP in line w/ EU Biodiversity strategy. Charlie McConalogue Many farmers support strong environmental ambition but do we hear their voices? soundcloud.app.goo.gl/m93kvwuECpLCPQ…

Last week I met some #Offaly farmers on the #ShannonCallows, including dairy farmer Brendan McGarry, who’s been farming the Callows for generations, and is no stranger to the challenging nature of farming in this area.

Brendan works closely with Kathryn Finney from BirdWatch Ireland Ireland who also farms in this area, and co-ordinates the The Irish Breeding Curlew EIP. We discussed how the water levels are managed, and the possibilities to help improve the situation here for these farmers.

The #ShannonCallows are a special habitats for a range of flora, as well as endangered wading bird species, and I delighted to see lapwing, redshank, curlew, and snipe.

The Callows, however, have become increasingly threatened by summer flooding, which is not only challenging for farming enterprises, it is catastrophic for the breeding birds who can lose a whole brood. Some of the “Pinch Points” are visible in this photo.

Working on such critical sp. the scale of the problems are sometimes overwhelming & wins too few. But I always come back to..Can I let my kids grow up here without Cu & waders, that were common place when I was a kid? I just can’t do that! Learn more about how you too can help.

Bad taste Irish Farmers Journal Shows no understanding or care for the issues faced or caused by lack of female representation in Irish ag. Farm sustainability will only ever be properly solved when farming is not a single sex industry.

Just finished my run - on my own in a public place. In no more danger than last week, but the danger more to the forefront of my mind. Music that bit lower, that bit more aware. Knowing nods from women, reassuring smiles from men ..appreciated. This one was for you #AislingMurphy

Thanks to Minister Martin Heydon for meeting us today. We've always said that men are a vital part of tackling inclusivity in the sector and Minister Heydon's ongoing support is a prime example of the commitment we need to change mindsets.

⬇️tweet, a real low point in my career working on breeding waders. In this job it often feels like 2 steps forward, 10 back. 🙇‍♀️ So proud of The Irish Breeding Curlew EIP BirdWatch Ireland staff who picked themselves up, got straight back out & gave even more.🇮🇪needs to start funding b4 sp. r so critical

" when Packie Bonner saved that penalty in Italia 90, there were more than 5000 breeding pairs of curlew in ireland. Today there are fewer than 130". m.independent.ie/news/environme… #BiodiversityWeek2022

I am ashamed to say I had never seen or heard a Curlew in real life before heading out with the @npwsBioData to do a report for CountryWide. What was a common farmland bird has seen over a 90% decline since the 1970's. The next generation might never see or hear it.

Brilliant news for so so many reasons. A real chance for these farmland birds; supporting farmers to farm sustainably; safeguarding species and carbon rich habitats, that also support other birds and sp.; safeguarding our public and children’s heritage 👏👏🙏 Malcolm Noonan
