Congratulations to Jon Freeman, our 2022 SANS Early Career Award Winner and Eveline Crone, our 2022 SANS Distinguished Scholar Award Winner!

Today, we wrote the White House White House Office of Science & Technology Policy requesting that U.S. National Science Foundation act on its near-completed pilot data and begin measuring & reporting sexual orientation & gender identity by 2023, and develop an infrastructure for addressing LGBTQ+ disparities in the US STEM population starting 2024.

Update: U.S. National Science Foundation is making a decision now whether or not to collect LGBTQ+ data on the US STEM workforce. After years of delays, it completed a pilot with n=7,800. There weren’t any issues. The scientific community can’t improve a problem it refuses to measure.nature.com/articles/d4158…

Thank you Science Magazine for the coverage and Katie Langin for tracking this issue for 5 years now lnkd.in/eCmt2cuX

1700 scientists, including me, have signed a letter by Jon Freeman calling for the U.S. National Science Foundation to include questions regarding #LGBTQ orientation to enact data-driven policies to improve equity in science. Let's see some change. 🏳️🌈🥼🧪 nature.com/articles/d4158… #queerinSTEM #LGBTQinSTEM

If you're going to #SPSP2023, check out presentations by Freeman Lab @ Columbia folks, including @youngkidhong, John Andrew Chwe, Maryam Bin Meshar | مريم بن مسحار, and DongWon OH | 오동원 | 吳東源! Details below. Society for Personality and Social Psychology

Excited to present my first lead-author paper with Jon Freeman, published in SPPS! We find that people perceive trustworthiness from groups of faces in a half second. Link: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/19…

Registration is now open! Join us for a FREE, first-of-its-kind symposium & think tank on the inclusion & advancement of LGBTQ+ people in STEM at @AAAS in DC on May 30, featuring policymakers, researchers, community members, U.S. National Science Foundation, NIH, & White House Office of Science & Technology Policy. eventbrite.com/e/inclusion-an…

NSF is conducting mass piloting of LGBTQ+ questions on college graduates & PhDs, on target to produce the first official statistics on LGBTQ+ representation in STEM in 2026. This would ensure equity via data-driven policies & benefit science for all. (1/2)news.columbia.edu/news/national-…

Now that large-scale piloting of LGBTQ+ questions for national surveys of the scientific workforce is finally underway, @TravisYork at @AAAS and I have asked U.S. National Science Foundation to consider making crucial information about these efforts available to the public. PDF: shorturl.at/ghkz9

New in Association for Psychological Science led by Youngki Hong: Facial stereotypes (e.g., trustworthiness) lead to consequential biases in criminal sentencing, hiring, and politics. We show these biases can be eliminated via a training that dismantles the associations. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117… (1/6)
