Graduations 👏We are proud that Agatha Treveil & Marton Olbei had their NRPDTP PhD graduation, and Georgi Georgi Alabone graduated UEA Natural Sciences - they did fantastic projects in our lab Earlham Institute Quadram Institute and published a bunch of papers. Well done and thank you!

First meeting welcoming the cohort of seven PhD students to our new Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics Doctoral Training Programme Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics DTP led by UEA, funded by Medical Research Council. Great to meet the students and celebrate success in real life! Their PhD voyage begins!

I had a wonderful day today where I got to load a MinION flow cell. Thank you Dave Baker for the guidance this week. I’m looking forward to analysing the data tomorrow! 👩🏻💻👩🏻🔬

PhD student Georgi Alabone’s project is called Testing mechanistic hypotheses for dietary therapeutics in the treatment of Crohn’s disease using integrated microbiomics from artificial colon systems. One of the treatments uses solid food and could be revolutionary. #mmbdtpstudents

Day 1: mapping & #variant calling in #comparativegenomics Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics DTP week, & Gemma Langridge has told us valuable #bioinfo lessons: 1) sanity check your seq data, 2) choose suitable references, 3) if you don't ask Marie Anne Chattaway qs, she'll ask you instead! This week Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics DTP visited UK Health Security Agency, where we learnt all about the epidemiological, genomic and bioinformatic methodologies involved in investigating outbreaks of gastrointestinal infections!🧫🧬Thank you for so much hosting us and for this fascinating and inspiring opportunity!

When I am not talking about grown men and women playing a game for a living, I actually do some science. Had a great two days with the Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics DTP at UK Health Security Agency looking at genomics, public health and epidemiology in the context of a gastrointestinal infection outbreak! Thanks everyone!
