I had a wonderful day today where I got to load a MinION flow cell. Thank you Dave Baker for the guidance this week. I’m looking forward to analysing the data tomorrow! 👩🏻‍💻👩🏻‍🔬

Today in training I assembled the same E. coli genome from short reads and long reads. I used shovill for the short reads and unicycler for the long reads. Plotting the assemblies in bandage helped me understand why the long read assembled into one contig. #Bioinformatics

PhD student Georgi Alabone’s project is called Testing mechanistic hypotheses for dietary therapeutics in the treatment of Crohn’s disease using integrated microbiomics from artificial colon systems. One of the treatments uses solid food and could be revolutionary. #mmbdtpstudents

When I am not talking about grown men and women playing a game for a living, I actually do some science. Had a great two days with the Microbes, Microbiomes and Bioinformatics DTP at UK Health Security Agency looking at genomics, public health and epidemiology in the context of a gastrointestinal infection outbreak!
