We are hiring - an exciting PhD project aimed at the adaptation of Mycobacterium to acidic pH. From fundamental questions to environmental, medical and industrial implications. With stellar mentors Chris Greening and Jianhua Guo. Spread the word!

Have you wondered what is the first step for life to colonise newly formed lands? Today at 10 am (Room 1), I'll be presenting our work at Chris Greening and with @Sean_K_Bay about the functional basis of primary succession in glacial forelands at #ASM2023, thank you ASM

Most of life's diversity and history is microbial with a meagre fossil record that precludes resolving evolution in deep time. We infer ancestral transitions to aerobicity and use the rise of oxygen as a new constraint to resolve the timetree of Bacteria. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

So proud of Dr Dr Rachael Lappan (group leader / DECRA fellow) and Dr @SophieIHolland (postdoc) who have just arrived in Antarctica to conduct a month of fieldwork. Representing Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future (Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future). Looking the part in the pics below!

Our huge new preprint is out, the sequel to our Huc paper. 1. Isolation of enzyme that consumes carbon monoxide from air 2. Discovery of quinone extraction as a new mechanism of energy coupling 3. Determination of structural basis of these activities biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/

We propose that caves are the first known ecosystems where atmospheric trace gases sustain microbial growth rather than survival and define this process as "aerotrophy". For more check out our preprint. Thx to Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future Chris Greening Perran Cook and many more. Comments welcome.

Introducing aerotrophy! New preprint shows that aerated caves are continually energised by atmospheric trace gases. The most abundant and active microbes fix carbon using hydrogen and methane gas. Huge collective effort led with @Sean_K_Bay and @chownlab. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Good morning South Africa! Join the Climate Change Roundtable at #ISME19, 5:30 today. I'll discuss how microbial biotech is critical for mitigation and adaptation. Our new preprint below sets the scene for why we need microbial ecology to guide this space. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
