The Pasque flower, pulsatilla vulgaris, is a beautiful spring flower, traditionally a sign that Easter has arrived. As the flowers develop, ferny foliage starts to appear at the base of the stems, which continues to look good after the flowering season has finished.

We planted this photinia hedge as a ‘stilted hedge’ 6 years ago. Stilted hedges are great when you don’t want to completely screen a wall (we like our dry-stone wall) but need a boundary.

Frogs and toads are beneficial to the garden because they feed on many pests. A single frog can eat over 100 insects in one night! To make sure you attract frogs and toads, eliminate chemicals and garden organically.

Temperatures can climb quite dramatically in the greenhouse at this time of year when the sun is out so, if you have a greenhouse, keep it well ventilated. Keep down the risk of spider mite by damping down regularly and avoid the need to use chemicals.

By sowing your vegetable crops little and often, you'll avoid having a glut all at one time. Sow your seeds in shallow drills, made with a stick, watering them down afterwards. Sow the seeds thinly, cover with soil and don't forget to label them!

Look out for Alyssum saxatile, flowering now. Smothered in yolk-yellow flowers, alyssum will flourish in drought conditions, preferring a dry spot in infertile soil. This makes it a perfect partner with aubretia growing out of walls or other seemingly impossible places! 🌾

Doing small jobs in the garden makes all the difference and lightly forking over the borders, pulling out weeds as you go, is very rewarding. 😀 🌾🌸🌹🍀🌷🍃🌿🌾🌱🌼

Whitefly can be a problem in the greenhouse, especially if you're growing tomatoes, which seem to attract every specimen in the area! They lay their eggs on leaves and feed on the sap. It's best to get control now as it gets worse as the season progresses.

There are many ways to control aphids without using chemicals in your garden. At this time of year, before an infestation has fully taken hold, spray aphids off the plants with a strong stream of water from a garden hose or pick off by hand.

The barberry, Berberis, is grown everywhere, but it is such a versatile plant, providing a long season of interest from the spring flowers to autumn berries, that it's not surprising.

if you think you’ll struggle to water your young, new plants this summer, consider putting in an irrigation system. If you’d like help, installing irrigation systems, DM me for further details.

Rope swags are a traditional way to grow roses. It's simply two posts with a rope swung between them. The idea is to train the stems of the rose horizontally along the ropes to encourage flowering side shoots. The pliable stems of rambling roses make them ideal for tying in.

Prepare the ground before planting them out and add a little general fertiliser, but not too much or you will get a lot of leaf growth and few flowers. 🌾🌸🌹🍀🌷🍃🌿🌾🌱🌼

I love Rhododendrons but sadly can’t grow in my local soil because they need acid soil. A way around this is to grow them in containers filled with ericaceous compost. They look great in a Japanese-style garden!

Pruning is easily done annually, with young plants only needing a modest trimming. A Forsythia that has been untended for years may need to be lopped almost to the ground. Trimming forsythias while they are young will help control their shape and size to be enjoyed every year
