The paper describes three national programmes, the possible impact on rates of suicide and self-harm, and (most striking of all) the effect on staff engagement, local activity and innovation. Our NCISH Director and lead author Nav Kapur talks about the paper in this video.

Martin was a skilled & much-valued colleague to us NCISH. The award in his name - to an early career researcher in suicide/self-harm - is funded by his family. Judging of submissions will take place this week. An important & poignant moment in our academic calendar.

Our paper on the importance of implementing research to prevent suicide just published in the April edition of the Lancet Psychiatry. National programmes increased service activity & innovation and may have reduced suicide and self-harm in some groups buff.ly/tI9uWrT

Thanks to Philip Pirie's persistence, NHS guidance to health professionals on assessing suicide risk has changed. Risk assessment tools such as tick-box questionnaires don't work, but persist. Focus on the individual: not on flawed assessment of risk. ft.com/content/eeb12c…
